Idiom ｜ Pick up the Slack
The idiom ‘to pick up the slack’ means to work harder, faster, or to provide effort to a task because it’s not getting done. Most commonly, though not always, it refers to the work that someone else has stopped doing, but still needs to be done.
Like ‘let the cat out of the bag‘ and ‘cut some slack,’ this idiom has its roots in nautical origins. Slack, on its own, means loose, not tight. Typically used to describe the lack of tension in ropes. British sailors used the idiom to ask for help in pulling the ropes associated with the sails on a boat.
Pick up the slackはよりがんばって、すばやく働くこと、もしくは終っていないタスクが完了するように努力することをさします。
誰かが中断してしまった仕事、でも終了させなければならない仕事についてさすことが多いです。
Let the Cat out of the Bagと同様にこのイディオムも海事の起源をもっています。
Slackは、タイトではなくたるんでいることを意味します。一般的に縄がゆるんでいることをさす表現です。
英国の船乗りは船の帆と関連して縄をひっぱることで助けを求めるためにこのイディオムをつかいました。
Idiom Usage ｜ Pick Up the Slack 使い方
This idiom operates like a verb and adverb in sentences. Since it’s doing the work of the verb, it is usually found in the middle of a sentence.
The idiom usually doesn’t get split, however it is possible to split the phrase between ‘up’ and ‘slack.’ In such cases, ‘the’ is replaced with a quantifier.
➣ We have to pick up a lot of slack.
It can be used in both formal and information situations.
このイディオムは動詞の役割をはたしているため、文章の真ん中で通常使われます。
またイディオムがわかれて使われることはありませんが、‘up’ と ‘slack’の間に数量詞が入ることはあります。

The manager has to pick up the slack when employees don’t do their jobs correctly.

If you want to finish by 5pm you’ll have to pick up the slack.

Barry called in sick today so we’re going to need to pick up the slack.

Slack off is the opposite of pick up the slack, meaning to not work hard, or at all.
➣ If we didn’t slack off all afternoon, we would be done.
Slack can also be turned into a noun; slacker. A slacker is a person that is lazy.
➣ I was a slacker in high school.
Slack offはあまりがんばって働かない、がんばって働かないという意味で、pick up the slackの反対の意味の言葉です。
➣ If we didn’t slack off all afternoon, we would be done.
午後怠けていなかったら、全部おわっていたのに。
Slackは名詞slackerとして使われることもあります。A slackerは怠け者を意味します。
➣ I was a slacker in high school.
私は高校の時怠け者だった。
Use mnemonic! ニーモニックテクニック
Think of the boat which doesn’t move at all because of the slack in the ropes. You have to pick up the slack otherwise everyone will die there.
