As with every language, there are many expressions and idioms in English where animals, like horses, are used to help give a special meaning. In fact, there are too many to count. In this lesson, we’re going to focus on idioms that use horse.

◆beat a dead horse
To waste energy on a lost cause or a situation that cannot be changed.
John has been trying to get his book published for the last three decades but he is clearly beating a dead horse.
無駄なことをする、無駄骨を折る、決着のついた話を蒸す返す

◆bet on the wrong horse
To support a person or thing that ultimately fails.
My company invested a lot of money into our new office just before Covid hit. They were betting on the wrong horse as they should have been investing into a virtual office.
負け馬にかける、予測を誤る

◆a one-horse race
A race or competition that only one of the competitors has a real chance of winning.
Brisbane was in a one-horse race for the 2032 Olympics.
誰が勝つか分かり切っている状態

ブリズベンは2032年のオリンピックの候補地として独走状態だった。
