The idiom ‘the best thing since sliced bread‘ means something is a good idea or good plan. It could mean that something is innovative. It can also be used to hype a person up.
The bread-slicing machine was invented in 1928 in the US. Before this, bread would have had to have been hand cut at home by the consumer. By the 1930s, pre-sliced bread was fully commercialized and became the standard. The idiomatic phrase, “the best thing since sliced bread,” then became a common way of hyping a new product or invention. Wonder Bread, the first commercial manufacturer of pre-wrapped, pre-sliced bread, may have also contributed to the popularization of the phrase with their advertising slogan in that time period.
