Idiom ｜ Lipstick on a Pig
The idiom “lipstick on a pig” has been around for centuries, perhaps much longer, in one form or another. Check the various forms at the end of the lesson to see the other examples.
The idioms evolution to lipstick mostly likely originated in 1926, when Charles Lummins, the editor of the Los Angeles Times, wrote:
“Most of us know as much of history as a pig does of lipsticks.”
It would take almost another 60 years for the current iteration of the phrase we use today to appear in a Washington Post article. The 1985 article was about park renovations in San Francisco and said:
“That would be like putting lipstick on a pig.”
The phrase has since become common in American lexicon, especially in politics.
The idiom means that making superficial or cosmetic changes to a product (or a person) in a futile effort to disguise the fundamental failings or shortcomings.

This idiom can be uses as a full phrase, but it’s mostly commonly* accompanied by a subject/pronoun, like it/that, the verb ‘be,’ the conjunction ‘like,’ and the verb ‘put.’
Subject/Pronoun + Be + Like + Put + Idiom
This + is + like + putting + lipstick on a pig.
*Depending on the situation and grammar tense, the idiom structure could change.
このイディオムは単体で使うこともできますが、主語や itやthatのような代名詞、BE動詞、接続詞「like」、動詞「put」を伴うのが一般的*です。

Use mnemonic! ニーモニックテクニック
A great mnemonic device to help you remember this phrase is to imagine dressing up a pig. You put anything you want on a pig, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a pig.
