Idiom ｜ Give the Cold Shoulder
To “give someone the cold shoulder” dates back to Scotland in the 1800s when the tradition was to give visitors to your home a warm meal. Typically roasted meat would have been commonly served to guests. If visitor was unwelcome or had worn out their welcome, they would have been given a serving of cold meat. Legend has it that a cold shoulder of mutton would have been given, hence to give someone the cold shoulder. This became an unspoken signal that a person was no longer welcome and it was time for them to leave.
These days we don’t usually feed our guests cold mutton when we want them to leave, but the phrase as endured and is commonly used today.
The idiom means to ignore a person’s desires. So, when giving one the cold shoulder, a person might literally ignore what someone is saying or they might be intentionally rude to that person.
「give someone the cold shoulder」は、1800年代スコットランドに起源をさかのぼります。そのころは一般的にはあたたかい食事が来客に振る舞われ、通常はローストされたお肉がだされていました。来客が歓迎されなかったり、歓迎モードがおわりそろそろ帰ってもらいたいなと思う場合、冷たい肉が出されたのです。伝説によれば、羊肉の冷たい肩ロースが出されたといわれており、よって冷たい肩をあたえる（give someone the cold shoulder）ことが、もう歓迎されない、もうそろそろお帰りくださいという暗黙の合図となりました。
最近では、客を帰らせるために冷えた羊肉をだすことはあまりしませんが、この表現は今でもよく使われています。
このイディオムは、人の願望を無視することを意味します。つまり、「give someone the cold shoulder」するということは、相手の言っていることを文字通り無視することかもしれませんし、相手に対して意図的に失礼な態度をとることかもしれません。

To use this idiom properly we need to add a subject before the idiom to make the sentence function grammatically.

A great mnemonic device to help you remember this phrase is think about Elsa from the Disney Movie “Frozen.” Her ice magic and coldness separated her from her family and caused her to ignore them, like she was inadvertently giving them the cold shoulder.
