Idiom ｜ To Steal (Someone’s) Thunder
The idiom ‘to steal (someone’s) thunder’ means to preemptively take credit for someone else’s work or to prevent someone from getting attention or praise. One way you can think of this idiom is that it’s a fancy way to say ‘spoiler.’
The idiom comes from a playwright named John Dennis, who created a new method of making thunder sounds for one of his plays in the early 1700s, which was quite unsuccessful. He later found his thunder sound method being used at a performance of Macbeth, where he became enraged and screamed out “That’s my thunder. Damn them! They will not let my play run, but they steal my thunder.”
イディオム「to steal (someone’s) thunder」は、 先制して誰か他の人が行ったことの賞賛をうばってしまうこと、もしくは、他の人から注目や賞賛をうばってしまうことを意味します。「spoiler（略奪者）」のよりしゃれた言い方ともいえます。
1700年代初期に演劇のなかで雷の音を使う新しい取り組みをしたけれどもあまり成功をしなかった脚本家のJohn Dennisからこのイディオムはきています。John Dennisは後に、Macbethのなかで雷の音が使われているのをみつけ、そこで激怒し「俺の雷じゃないか。信じられない。私の作品は上演しないで、雷の音を盗んだのだ！」と叫びました。
Usage 使い方
This idiotic phrase is always used as part of a larger sentence. At the very minimum, the idiom needs a subject and pronoun to make it a complete sentence.
Subject + Stole + Pronoun + Thunder
He stole my thunder.
The idiom can be used to talk about the past, present, or future. It can be used in the positive, negative, or question form.
This idiom is appropriate in both casual and formal situations.
このイディオムは長いセンテンスの一部として通常使われます。最低限、主語と所有格をたしてセンテンスを完成させる必要があります。
主語+ Stole + 所有格 + Thunder
He stole my thunder. （彼は僕を出し抜いた。）
過去、現在、未来について話すときに使われます。また肯定形、否定形、疑問形でも使うことができます。カジュアル、フォーマル両方の場で使えます。

I didn’t want to steal your thunder so I didn’t say about our upcoming plans.
ニュースを横取りしたくなかったので、きたる計画についてなにもいわなかった。
One of my co-workers is really disliked because he’s always stealing everybody’s thunder.
ある同僚はとても嫌われている。というのも、彼はいつもみんなを出し抜こうとしているからだ。
Use mnemonic! ニーモニックテクニック
When we have thunder, we also have lightning. Rather, it’s the other way around. First there is lightning, and then there is thunder. We if we think about lightning as a flash of creativity, an idea, or a thought, and the thunder as the result of that, then we have a great mnemonic story for our brain. First we see the lightning and then we steal the thunder. We hear the idea, then take credit for the idea.
Of course, we always encourage you to create your own mnemonic device. It’s much more effect if you do that.
