In some languages, there is only one word for the toilet. In English, however, there are many words for this room. More than you might realize.

In this lesson, we’re going to teach about the various expressions related to toilets. You can also find out what American hate the word ‘toilet.’

トイレをあらわす言葉は日本語ですと、「お手洗い」「便所」「化粧室」ぐらいでしょうか。

英語は思いのほか、たくさんの言い方が存在しています。

Have you ever heard the expression “number one” or “number two”?

They mean:

  • Number one = pee
  • Number two = poo/poop

If we are talking to a young child, we might ask:

Do you have to go number one or number two?

I have to do a number two! = I have to poop.

Note that “pee” and “poo/poop” can also used as verbs.

  • He peed his pants.
  • He pooped his pants.

As you may have noticed, the former means that a person has peed, while the latter means that a person has pooped. In their pants means they didn’t make it to a toilet and they literally did it in their pants.


子供っぽい表現方法

「Number one」「Number two」という表現を聞いたことはありますか。

  • Number one = pee おしっこ
  • Number two = poo/poop  うんち

という意味合いになります。

Do you have to go number one or number two?

おしっこ、うんち、どっちにいきたいの?

I have to do a number two!

うんちにいかないとならないの。

ちなみに「pee」や「poo/poop」は動詞としても使われます。

  • He peed his pants.
  • He pooped his pants.

両方とも彼はおもらしをしてしまったという表現ですね。

お気づきのとおり、前者はおしっこを、後者 はうんちを粗相してしまったという意味になります。

Here are some vulgar expressions for the toilet. They are good to know as they are frequently used in casual conversations as well as in movies and TV shows.

  1. I need to take a piss. = pee
  1. I need to take a shit. = poop

Both “piss” and “shit” can be used as verbs.

In the sense of peeing, it can be expressed as “He pissed his pants.” or “He shit his pants.

The former means that the person has peed and the latter means that the person has pooped roughly.

Shit has two different simple past tense forms. Most American now days use ‘shit’ for the past tense. However, some older people might use the older form, which is ‘shat.’

He shat his pants. = He shit his pants.


下品めな表現方法

ドラマではでてくることもありますが、下品めな表現を紹介します。

  1. I need to take a piss.
  1. I need to take a shit.
  1. は小便にいってくるわ、2. は排便してくるわ、のようにかなりダイレクトな表現です。

ちなみに、「piss」も「shit」も動詞として使われます。

おもらしをしたという意味で、He pissed his pants.や、He shit his pants.と表現が可能です。

前者がおしっこを、後者がうんちを粗相してしまったという意味になります。

なお、「shit」の過去形は「shit」と覚えている方、それで正解ですが、豆知識として、年配の方ですと、「shat」を使う方もいますので、ぜひご留意ください。

He shat his pants. = He shit his pants.です。

なお、日本語とも類似していますが、トイレにいくの表現は、トイレや排泄物を連想させないものがお上品なものになります。
