The idiom “why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free” dates back as far as the 17th century, with the earliest recorded use of this phrase dated at 1659. It was included in a collection of proverbs compiled by James Howell, a prominent historian and writer of the 17th century. While the wording was slightly different, its underlying meaning was the same, and it has little to do with cows or milk.
The idiom means that if a person is already able to obtain some commodity or benefit freely or easily, then they won’t be inclined to pay for it. While it can be used for any variety of services, most tend to use it as a colorful euphemism when talking about sex and marriage.
