When You Have Eyes Bigger Than Your Stomach
The idiom ‘to have eyes bigger than one’s stomach’ means to have taken more than one can eat. It could be used to mean to want more that one can reasonable handle as well. Do note that the second meaning is used less frequently.
The phrase dates back to the 1500s, making this idiom quite old. It is still commonly used today, being frequently used at buffet restaurants.
「to have eyes bigger than one’s stomach」という慣用句は、食べきれないほどのものをとってしまったという意味です。「食べきれないほどのものを欲しがる」という意味でも使われることがあります。2番目の意味ではあまり使われないのでご留意ください。
このフレーズの起源は1500年代に遡り、かなり古いイディオムとなります。現在でもよく使われ、特にビュッフェレストランでよく使われることが多いです。
Usage 使い方
One’s eyes are bigger than one’s stomach is most always used in the affirmative.
To form the idiom correctly you will need to add a subject and pronoun.
Subject + eyes are bigger than + pronoun + stomach
My + eyes are bigger than + my + stomach.
Remember that if the subject is plural, stomach will change to stomachs.
One’s eyes are bigger than one’s stomach（目は胃袋より大きい）は、ほとんどの場合、肯定的に使われます。
イディオムを正しく使うためには、主語と代名詞（所有格）を追加する必要があります。
主語 + eyes are bigger than + 代名詞（所有格） + stomach
主語 + eyes are bigger than + 代名詞（所有格）+ stomach
主語が複数ある場合、stomachはstomachsに変わることを覚えておきましょう。

My brother ordered a lot of food for the party, but I guess his eyes were bigger than his stomach because we have a lot of leftovers.
兄はパーティーのためにたくさんの料理を注文しましたが、かなり残ってしまったので、胃袋より目の方が大きかったようです（＝欲張りすぎようです）。
All the kids piled food onto plates, but I think their eyes are bigger than their stomachs.
子供たちはみんなお皿にたくさん食べ物をもっていましたが、胃袋より目の方が大きいような気がしています（＝欲張りすぎのように思います）。
I wanted a promotion at work so I took a lot of new responsibilities, but I don’t think I can handle. My eyes were bigger than my stomach.
仕事で昇進を望んでいたので、新しい責務をたくさん引き受けてしまい、こなせるとは思えません。胃袋より目の方が大きかったです（＝欲張りすぎました）。
