Do you know the TV show ‘Cheers?’ It’s American sitcom which began airing in 1982 and, despite initially low ratings, eventually received 117 Emmy nominations and 28 awards, a miraculous feat. It was one of the best love shows of the 80s and 90s.

Cheers ｜ Background Information
The show depicts the daily lives of regulars at Cheers, a bar in Boston. Owner Sam Malone, a former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, tends bar and chases ladies.
The characters are all unique and their chemistry is interesting. The writing is very tight, with a rapid fire approach to telling witty jokes, puns, and clever plays on words. Even advanced English speakers will have a hard time understanding it all.

元ボストン・レッドソックスの投手だったサムがバーテンダー兼オーナーとして働いているボストンにあるバー「Cheers」に、毎日常連がきてはいろんな騒動をおこしている風景をおもしろおかしく描いています。
登場人物のキャラクターが全員個性的で、そのケミストリーがおもしろいのですが、それだけではなく、ウィットなジョークがいたるところにちりばめられた無駄のない脚本で、英語上級者でも、すべて理解することは難しいドラマでしょう。
その中でも特に難しい言葉遊びのシーンを選び、今回は動画で解説したいと思っております。
面白い脚本は、言葉遊び、ダブル・ミーニング等、たくさんの趣向がこらされています。これにどこまでくらいついていけるかは、英語学習者としてはチャレンジングな課題ではありますが、果敢に挑戦していきたいところです。
動画にでてくる主な登場人物
動画を見る前にここででてくる主な登場人物をご紹介します。
- Sam 「Cheers」バーテンダー兼オーナー。イケメンで軽い性格。元ボストン・レッドソックスの投手。
- Woody 「Cheers」バーテンダー助手。誠実で優しい好青年。天然ボケぶりがかわいく愛されキャラ。
- Kelly お金持ちのお嬢様。天然ボケぶりはWoodyに負けない。
- Nash Kellyの彼氏。お金持ちということを鼻にかけた嫌なヤツ。
今回取り上げる動画は、SamとWoodyが、Kellyのホームパーティーにて、バーまわりの仕事をしている設定となっています。パーティーに参加している人々は、お金持ちばかり。Samはあの手この手を使いながらチップを荒稼ぎ。Woodyにもアドバイスをしますが、天然ボケなWoodyがお金持ちのNashに話しかけた結果、ちぐはぐな会話になってしまう結果に！

Woody
