Studio Ghibli Received an honorary Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
In this lesson we’ll take a look at Gorō Miyazaki acceptance speech at Cannes. We’ll see what he said, learn some of the key vocabulary, and how to use them. A must watch for any Ghibli fans.

Bonjour. Konichiwa.
Um, in English.
Thank you all for having us here, um, today, and, um, thank you helping us with all the movies we have made. Not only the movie, but also the park, Ghibli.
(French) Oh, I’m sorry.
Um, they (Hayao Miyazaki) were supposed to be, um, here today with us, but they cannot be here.
So they have something here for… for you right now.
So, since the inception of Ghibli, um, you have been a factory of wonders that have not ceased to amaze us. And with this Palme d’Or honor we’d like to thank you for all the magic you’ve brought to the world of cinema.
Thank you so much.
I’m sorry. Ghibli studio has been created 40 years ago from, um, le tre… the three creators; Miyazaki, Takahata, and, um… Who’s the other one?
Suzuki.
And Suzuki.
Since 40 years now we made a lot of movie, we created a museum, and we recently opened a park. Ghibli Park.
Of course, um, the three creators of the studio are the biggest contributors to its success, but I will… I want to associate (he means share) this honor that we are having today with all the staff and all the workers of the Ghibli studio.
This hon… This honor is not only for the Ghibli studio and those that created the movies and everything around Ghibli studio, but to the fans and all the supporters of our movies and our work all over the world.
I would really like today thanks all of them.
We got the Oscar very recently for ‘The Boy and Heron’ and the um, Ghibli representante came back with the… the Oscar statue.
I… I… I learned when they came back with the statue that the Oscars is not in a box.
The Ghibli representative went the Oscar had to take a towel from their hotel room to put around the Oscar for it not to get used during the travel.
I’m pretty reassured since I’ve seen that the Palme d’Or was in a box.
