Understanding Roe v. Wade

In June of 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States reversed it’s ruling on the court case Roe v. Wade. This is a huge legal shift in how America will deal with issue of abortion.

If you want to understand Roe v. Wade like a native speaker, this is a great starting point. In this lesson we explain exactly what Roe v. Wade is, as well some of the key vocabulary you’ll need to know to truly understand this issue.

◆The Supreme Court

The highest federal court in the United States. It normally consists of nine justices whom are appointed for life.

I visited the Supreme Court with a tour group on my trip to America.



◆Court Ruling

A decision made by a court.

A court ruling has blocked Elon Musk from buying Twitter.

A significant or historic event, juncture, achievement, etc.

In a landmark deal, Sony and Nintendo decided to merge.



◆Constitutional Right

A right or freedom protected in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Free speech is a very important constitutional right. It’s so important that it’s the first protection listed in the Bill of Rights.




A person who wants abortion to be outlawed. Usually pro-lifers are connected to religious groups, but that is not a requirement to being a pro-lifer. See the adjective form below.

After becoming more involved in my church I became a pro-lifer.




A person who believes that abortion is a private medical issue and should be an option for a woman to choose. See the adjective form below.

After reading about the horrible conditions of back-alley abortion clinics I became a pro-choicer.

To reverse or abolish an official or legal decision.

The new evidence we found helped overturn our previous conclusion.



➣Adjectives 形容詞


Opposing abortion and euthanasia.

He grew up in a very strict, religious household so it’s not surprising that he’s pro-life activist.




Supporting or advocating the legal right of a woman to choose whether or not she will have an abortion.

There was a pro-choice group protesting outside the court today.
