Understanding What Happened to Prime Minister Abe
On Friday July 8th, 2022, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot twice in the back in Nara prefecture while giving a speech. Sadly, he died in the hospital a few hours later from this injury.

◆Assassination
The murder of someone famous or important, usually for political reasons.
The assassination of John Lennon happened outside his home in NYC in 1980.
有名なもしくは重要な誰かを殺害すること。通常は政治的な理由なことが多い。
John Lennonの暗殺は1980年ニューヨーク市の彼の家の外で発生した。
◆Conspiracy theory
A theory that explains an event or set of circumstances as the result of a secret plot, usually by powerful conspirators.
The internet is full of crazy conspiracy theories, from who killed JFK to what kind of meat is in KFC.
通常強力な共謀者によってひきおこされた陰謀が絡む事件や状況を説明する仮説。
インターネットは誰がJFKを殺したのかからKFCがどんな肉を使っているかまで、突拍子もない陰謀説にみちている。
◆Scandal
An action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing general public outrage.
The governor stepped down after the scandal was reported in the newspaper.
道徳的または法的に間違っているとみなされ、一般大衆の怒りを買うような行為や出来事。
このスキャンダルが新聞で報道された後、知事は退任した。

To invent a word or phrase.
The idiom ‘at the drop of a hat’ was coined in the 1800s.
言葉やフレーズをつくりあげること。

Having previously been a particular thing.
The former company I worked at had high salaries and great benefits.
以前は何か特定のものであったこと。

◆Disenfranchised
Having no power, or the feeling of having no power, to make people listen to your opinion.
Many poor people in the inner city feel disenfranchised.
自分の意見を人がきいてもらうために、力がない、もしくは力がないように感じてしまうこと。
インナーシティーの貧しい人々の多くは権利を奪われたように感じている。
◆Controversial
Causing disagreement.
Overturning Roe v Wade was a controversial decision.
意見の相違を引き起こすこと。
ロー対ウェイド判決を覆すことは、物議をかもしだす決断でした。
◆Shady
Underhanded, dishonest, and/or deceitful.
Be careful in Roppongi. There are a lot of shady people there.
秘密の、不正な、欺瞞に満ちた。
六本木では注意してね。あそこは怪しい人が多いから。
◆Disingenuous
Not sincere, dishonest, or not speaking the complete truth.
It is very disingenuous of tobacco companies to say cigarettes are not addictive.
正直ではない、不誠実である、あるいは完全な真実を語っていない。
タバコに依存性はないと言うタバコ会社は、とても不誠実である。

◆Gravely
Very seriously.
The world has suffered gravely because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
とても重く。

◆Ex-
A prefix meaning “not” or indicating a former title, status, etc.
My ex-boyfriend was mentally abusive.
“not”（否定） もしくは前のタイトル、ステータスをさす前におくもの。
元カレは精神的な虐待をしていた。
➣Idioms イディオム
◆The tip of the iceberg
A small, known part of a larger, hidden problem/issue.
The Tokyo Olympic sponsor scandal is just the tip of the iceberg.
より大きな、隠れた問題・課題の小さな、既知の部分。
東京オリンピックのスポンサー疑惑は氷山の一角に過ぎない。
◆Bait-and-switch
Advertising goods/services which are apparent bargains, with the intention of substituting inferior or more expensive goods/services.
Bait-and-switch scams are common when buying things online, as the seller can post a photo of one thing and then sell you something far worse than what was shown.
粗悪品または高価な商品・サービスの売りつけを意識し、明らかにお買い得と思われる商品・サービスを広告すること。
ネットで物を買うときによくあるのが「おとり商法」で、写真が掲載されているものの、その物よりはるかに悪い物を売りつけられるというものです。
