Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg was arrested in Luetzerath, Germany while protesting at the opencast coal mine of Garzweiler 2. After her arrest she joined a panel of climate activists in Davos to debate the environmental crisis with the executive director of the International Energy Agency. In this lesson, we’re going to take a look at what she said, learn some of the key phrases, and how to use them.

- Um, I’m just going to ask you what your message is the World Economic Forum here today.
And very nice to see you. Thank you very much indeed for joining us today.
Thank you for being here and thank you for, yeah. Um, so we… we are right now in Davos where the… basically the people who are mostly fueling the destruction of the planet. The people who are at the very core of the climate crisis. The people who are investing in fossil fuels, etc etc.
Um, and yet, somehow, these are the people that we seem to rely on solving our problems where they have proven time and time again that they are not prioritizing that. They are prioritizing self… self greed, corporate greed and short-term economic profits above people and above planet.
And the…
We are listening…
We seem to be listening to them rather than the people who are actually affected by the climate crisis. The people who are living on the front lines.
And… and that’s… That kind of tells us the situation; how absurd this is.
Um, so… with the people who… who we really should be listening to are… are not here. Instead, we are bombarded with messages from people who are… who are basically the people who are causing this crisis.
