Idiom ｜ Wear One’s Heart On One’s Sleeve
The idiom to “wear one’s heart on one’s sleeve,” not to be confused with to “have an ace up one’s sleeve,” is yet other expression that is widely credited to Shakespeare. In Othello Iago says:
“But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve, for daws [birds] to peck at. I am not what I am.”
While Shakespeare gets the credit, he was the first to put the words to paper, the phrase most certainly predates him and probably originated in the Middle Ages. On a knight’s armor a ‘sleeve’ referred to the piece that covered the arm. Knights would often wear a lady’s token around their sleeve of armor while jousting. So they were wearing their love, or heart, on their sleeve.
The idiom means to make one’s emotions known, or to not hide how one feel.
「wear one’s heart on one’s sleeve」は、「have an ace up one’s sleeve」と混同してはならないイディオムですが、シェイクスピアのおかげで広まった表現です。オセロの中でイアーゴーの台詞に、
「俺の心臓を袖先にぶら下げてカラスにつつかせるさ。おれは見かけとは違う男だ。」
この言葉を最初に紙に書き記したシェイクスピアの功績は大きいものの、この表現はもっと古く、中世に起源をさかのぼります。騎士の鎧の「袖」は腕を覆う部分をさしていました。騎士はしばしば馬上槍試合の際に、鎧の袖に彼女を思い出すものを身につけていました。つまり、彼らは袖に愛、あるいは心をつけていたのです。
このイディオムは、自分の感情を表に出すこと、あるいは自分の気持ちを隠さないことを意味します。
Idiom Usage 使い方 ｜ Wear One’s Heart On One’s Sleeve
Using this idiom properly is fairly simple since it’s almost a full sentence.
First, add a subject to the beginning. Beyond that, make sure the possessive adjectives in the idiom agree with the subject.
The phrase can also be combined and used in a compound sentence (see below).
Subject + Idiom + Possessive Adjective + Idiom + Possessive Adjective + Idiom
I wear my heart on my sleeve.
The idiom is appropriate for both casual and professional settings.
