Idiom ｜ Play Cards Close to One’s Chest
The idiom “to play one’s cards close to one’s chest” originated in 1800s America, most likely from the card game poker. A common strategy would see players keeping their hand of cards close to their chest, hiding the value of the cards they had been dealt. Like many idioms, it’s nearly impossible to track-down exactly where and when it truly originated from.
The idiom means to act secretive, cautious, or reserved about one’s intentions, plans, or information. It is often used when one chooses not to share their ideas, thoughts, or opinions with others quickly and/or openly.

Idiom Usage 使い方 ｜ Play Cards Close to One’s Chest
Using this idiom properly is fairly easy since it’s almost a full sentence, but there are a few tricky points.
First, add a subject to the beginning. A modal verb is required after the subject. Finally, make sure the two possessive adjectives sandwiched in the idiom agree with the subject.
The phrase can also be combined and used in a compound sentence (see below).
Subject + Modal Verb + Idiom + Possessive Adjective + Idiom + Possessive Adjective + Idiom
You should play* your cards close to your chest.
*’Play‘ can be replaced with ‘keep;’ keep your cards close to your chest.
The idiom is appropriate for both casual and professional settings.
このイディオムはこれ自身でほぼ完成しているので、使い方が簡単です。ただし、必要なポイントがいくつかありますので解説します。
