Idiom ｜ Don’t Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth
“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” dates back over 1500 years when horses were a more common lavish gift then they are today. It comes from the believe that a horse’s age can be determined by examining its teeth. Therefore, looking at the teeth of a gifted horse is the same as checking the value of a present.
The phrase is attributed to St. Jerome in 400AD where in he wrote in The Letter to the Ephesians:
“Noli equi dentes inspicere donati.”
This roughly translate to; “never inspect the teeth of a given horse.”
The idiom has retained it’s original implication, meaning that one receiving a gift should be graciously and avoid voicing any criticisms.
「Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth」の起源は、馬が現在よりももっと一般的で豪華な贈り物であった1500年以上前にさかのぼります。これは、馬の年齢が歯を見ればわかるという考えからきています。ですので、贈られた馬の歯を見ることは、プレゼントの価値を確認することと同じことになります。
このフレーズは、西暦400年、St. Jeromeがエペソ人への手紙の中で書いたものとされている：
“Noli equi dentes inspicere donati.”
これは大雑把に訳すと、「与えられた馬の歯は決して検査するな 」という意味になります。
この慣用句は本来の意味のままとなっております。つまり、贈り物を受け取る者は、品よく接し、批判を口にするのを避けるべきだという意味になっています。
Idiom Usage 使い方 ｜ Gift Horse
This idiom is a full phrase, so we don’t need to add anything to it to make function grammatically. It’s always used in the negative. ‘Do not’ can be swapped to other negative words, like ‘should not’ or ‘never.’
The idiom is appropriate for both casual and professional settings.
このイディオムは完全なフレーズなので、何かを付け加える必要はありません。常に否定文としてチ使われます。「Do not」は「should not」や「never」のような他の否定語に置き換えることも可能です。
この慣用句は、カジュアルな場でもフォーマルな場でも使えます。
