Idiom ｜ Call a Spade a Spade
The idiom “call a spade a spade” has a long and colorful history. It actually dates all the way back to the ancient Greeks, whom wrote ‘calling a fig a fig.’ The phrase made its way into English in 1542 via translated Greek texts. This is also when the idiom changed to use spade. In this case, the spade in question is a gardening tool, and not the suit from a deck of playing cards, which I mistakenly believed the idiom was referring to.
A warning; some believe there are racist overtones to the idiom, as a spade is an out of date ethnic slur towards black people in the US. While it might have been used this way by some ill informed people in the mid-twentieth century, I can not find any written usage of the idiom to have these racist undertones. If this makes you uncomfortable, there are a list of variations at the end of the lesson that you can use instead.

「call a spade a spade」というイディオムには、長く面白い歴史がある。古代ギリシャにまで起源はさかのぼるのですがその当時は「calling a fig a fig」と記載されていました。このフレーズは、ギリシャ語の翻訳を通し、1542年に英語に組み込まれるようになります。fig（いちじく）ではなくspade（踏み鋤）を使うようになったのもこの頃になります。この場合、spadeとは園芸用具のことであり、トランプのスペードのことではないのでご留意ください。実はトランプのスペードをさしていると私は勘違いしていました。
注意：このイディオムには人種差別的なニュアンスが含まれていると思っている方も一部存在します。米国で黒人に対してspadeが使われていたことが随分昔にあったからです。人種差別的に20世紀半ばに、一部の無知な人々によってそのような使われた方をしたのかもしれませんが、色々調べたもののこのイディオムに人種差別的なニュアンスがあると書いた用例を見つけることはできませんでした。もし心配に感じられる方は、レッスンの最後に類似したイディオムをのせておきますので、それをかわりに使ってください。
このイディオムは、たとえそれが礼儀正しくなかったり、心地よいものでなかったとしても、何かについて真実を言うことを意味しています。
Idiom Usage 使い方 ｜ Call a Spade a Spade
Using this idiom properly is pretty easy since it’s almost a full sentence without adding anything. At a minimum, we just need to add a subject. The phrase can also be combined and used in a compound sentence.
The idiom is appropriate for both casual and professional settings.
このイディオムを使うことは簡単です。といいますのも、何か付け加えなくても、ほぼそれだけで使えるようになっていますので。主語を追加するだけで大丈夫です。また、結びついて、重文のなかで使われることもあります。
このイディオムは、カジュアルな場でもフォーマルな場でも問題なく使えます。

ストレートにいうね。そのドレスはあなたに似合わないよ。
She called a spade a spade when she saw the shady practices used by the company.

Let’s call a spade a spade. You didn’t borrow the money, you stole it.
ありのままに言おう。あなたはお金を借りたのではなく、盗んだのです。
Use mnemonic! ニーモニックテクニック
A great mnemonic device that I’ve used is to picture people playing a card game where the suits of the cards are important, like in poker where a wining hand can of the same suit (a flush). Four hearts and one spade is not good enough. A spade is not a heart. Calling a spade a spade.
Of course, we always encourage you to create your own mnemonic device. It’s much more effect if you do that.
