Idiom ｜ Butter Up
The idiom ‘butter up’ has some surprising roots. It is believed by some that the phrase originated in the Indian subcontinent, about 4,000 years ago. Worshipers were said to have hurled balls of ghee (clarified butter) at statues of the multiple deities and gods, believing this would grant good fortune.
Linguists reject this origin though. It’s a little too neat and clean to be true.
The Old English Dictionary, circa 1618, cites the word ‘butter’ as referring to “flattering or ingratiating speech or behavior, especially when used to gain favor or advantage.” Why butter was used this way is a bit of a mystery, but in short it has the same meaning as ‘butter up.’
The idiom means to be especially nice, and more specifically to flatter someone in an attempt to get something from them.
「butter up」というイディオムには意外なルーツがあります。このイディオムの起源は、約4000年前のインド亜大陸にあるという説があるんです。崇拝者たちは、神々の像にギー（澄ましバター）の玉を投げつけることで、幸運がもたらされると信じていたと言われています。
しかし、言語学者たちはこの由来を否定しています。少しすっきりきれいすぎて信じられないというわけなのです。
1618年頃の古英語辞典では、「butter（バター）」は「特に好意や利益を得るために使われる、お世辞やご機嫌をとる言動」をさすと記載されています。なぜ「butter（バター）」がこのように使われるようになったのかは少し謎なものの、「butter up」と同じ意味になっているのです。
このイディオムは、特に親切にすること、より具体的にいうと、何かを得るために誰かにお世辞をいうことを意味します。
Idiom Usage ｜ 使い方
This idiom is transitive phrasal verbs that is separable. That means two things, it needs an object and the phrase can be split in the middle.
Idiom + Object + Idiom
or
Idiom + Object
Remember that ‘butter’ is a verb and can change form depending on the grammar tense (see below).
The idiom is appropriate for both casual and professional settings.

Use mnemonic! ニーモニックテクニック
A mnemonic device to help you remember this idiom is to imagine applying butter to someone to help them slide through through a tight spot. You butter them up to make them slick so you can get them where you want them.
