Idiom ｜ Bring Home The Bacon
The idiom “bring home the bacon” most likely originated in the 12th century from a small town in Essex, England where a church offered a side of bacon to any man who swore he hadn’t argued with his wife for a year and a day, or 366 days.
While the phrase’s origin is in England over 800 years ago, the idiom wouldn’t become widespread until the early 1900s in the US. In 1906, Joe Gans won the world lightweight boxing championship in an arduous 42-round fight. Gans’ mother had sent him a telegram before the fight which read in part;
“Joe, the eyes of the world are on you. Bring home the bacon.”
Within weeks of the fight, the phrase became commonly-used in articles on boxing, then expanding to other sports, and finally beyond.
The idiom means to achieve success, earn money, or earn a living.

このイディオムの起源は800年以上遡ったイギリスにあるものの、アメリカでこの慣用句が広まったのは1900年代初頭になります。1906年、ジョー・ガンズが42ラウンドの激闘の末、ボクシングの世界ライト級チャンピオンに輝きました。ガンズの母親は試合前、彼に電報を送りました。
「Joe, the eyes of the world are on you. Bring home the bacon.」
試合から数週間も経たないうちに、この言葉はボクシングに関する記事でよく使われるようになり、やがて他のスポーツにも広がり、ついにはその枠をこえて使われるようになりました。
この慣用句は「成功をおさめる」「お金を稼ぐ」「生計を立てる」という意味があります。
Idiom Usage ｜ 使い方
This idiom is almost a full sentence, we just need to add a subject to the beginning. Keep in mind that ‘bring’ is a verb and can change form depending on the grammar tense. The phrase can also be used as part of a longer sentence (see below).
The idiom is appropriate for both casual and professional settings.
このイディオムはほぼ文章が完成していますので、最初に主語を加えるだけでOKです。「bring」は動詞ですので文法の時制によって形が変わることにご留意ください。このフレーズは、長い文の一部として使うこともできます（下記参照）。
このイディオムは、カジュアルな場でもフォーマルな場でも問題なく使えます。

Use mnemonic! ニーモニックテクニック
A mnemonic device to help you remember this idiom is to imagine it’s payday and you’ve gone to the supermarket to treat yourself to some expensive smoked bacon, which you will bring home and cook.
