Idiom ｜ Bad Egg
The idiom ‘bad egg’ is widely thought to have originated in the mid-1800s. The phrase first appeared in the novel ‘Captain Priest’ by Samuel A Hammett which was published in 1855.
In the language of his class, the Perfect Bird generally turns out to be “a bad egg.”
The idiom means a person who is unpleasant, corrupt, dishonest, or unreliable.
「bad egg（悪い卵）」というイディオムは1800年代半ばにうまれたと考えられています。このイディオムが最初に登場するのは、1855年に出版されたSamuel A Hammettの小説『Captain Priest』のなかです。
彼のクラスの言葉では、パーフェクト・バードは一般的に「悪い卵」と呼ばれます。
このイディオムは、不快な、腐敗した、不正直な、または信頼できない人物をさします。
Idiom Usage ｜ 使い方
This idiom usually works like the object of a sentence. So it needs a subject and the verb ‘be’ to function in a sentence. It can be used as a subject in some situations (see below).
This idiom does have an antonym; good egg.
The idiom is appropriate for both casual and professional settings.
このイディオムは通常、文の目的語のような形で機能します。そのため、主語とBE動詞を加える必要があります。状況によっては主語としても使えます（下記参照）。
このイディオムには「good egg」という反意語があります。
このイディオムは、カジュアルな場でもフォーマルな場でも問題なく使えます。

Use mnemonics! ニーモニックテクニック
A mnemonic device to help you remember this idiom is to imagine you have eggs at the store and when you take them home you discover that one of the eggs is black and rotten. You’ve got a bad egg.
