Idiom ｜ Ace Up One’s Sleeve
The idiom an “ace up one’s sleeve” originated in 1800s America, but began life much earlier in a slightly different form.
The phrase, thought slightly altered, dates from the 1500s when people would say “to have something up one’s sleeve.” At the time, sleeves were large and billowy, making them a good place to put all kinds of items.
Fast forward to the 1800s when less than honest Poker players would hide an Ace, which is the highest level card, up their sleeve. They would then attempt to cheat by sneaking out the Ace and replacing a weaker card. If this sounds familiar, it’s because the idiom to “play one’s cards close to one’s chest” and a similar origin.
The idiom as it’s used today has little to do with cheating. It means to have a powerful and often secret advantage that can be used if needed.
「ace up one’s sleeve 」というイディオムは1800年代のアメリカで生まれたものですが、それよりもはるか前に、少し違った形で使われていました。
このフレーズは、1500年代に「to have something up one’s sleeve 」と表現されていたものが少し変わったものと考えられています。当時、袖は大きく膨らんでおり、あらゆるものを入れておくのに適していました。
1800年代にいくと、誠実でないポーカープレイヤーは、最上級のカードであるエースを袖に隠していました。そして、そのエースをこっそりと取り出し、弱いカードにすり替えてイカサマをしようとしたのです。このイディオムに聞き覚えがあるとすれば、「play one’s cards close to one’s chest」というイディオムと同じような音と類似した由来があるからでしょう。
今日使われているこのイディオムには、不正行為という意味はありません。必要に応じて使える、強力でしばしば秘密の優位性をもっていることをさします。
Idiom Usage 使い方 ｜ Ace Up One’s Sleeve
Using this idiom properly is fairly easy since it’s almost a full sentence, but it does need two things to make it a full sentence.
First, add a subject to the beginning. A verb is required after the subject, usually ‘have.’ Finally, make sure the pronoun in the idiom agree with the subject.
The phrase can also be combined and used in a compound sentence (see below).
Subject + Verb + Idiom + Pronoun + Idiom
She has an ace up her sleeve.
The idiom is appropriate for both casual and professional settings.
このイディオムはほぼ全文なので簡単に使いこなすことができますが、文章を完成させるため2つのことをしましょう。
まず、主語を書き加えます。また主語の後には動詞が必要となりますが、「have」が使われることが多いです。最後に、イディオムの主語と所有格が一致しているかをご確認願います。
このフレーズは組み合わせて複文にすることもできます（下記参照）。
主語 + 動詞 + イディオム + 所有格 + イディオム
She has an ace up her sleeve.
このイディオムは、カジュアルな場でもフォーマルな場でも使えます。
