Japan’s Yudai Nishida Jumper Over Angola’s Gerson Gonçalves To Make a Shot

First possession for the host nation and a shot from three. It’s a miss there for their star.

Theis (Daniel Theis) running the lane. Clearing the way. Easy two (points).

Schroeder (Dennis Schroeder) in the corner.

And with those two players out, you see Japan now go to a 2-3 zone.

Extra pass down low. Wagner, Wagner finished to Thiemann (Johannes Thiemann).

Moritz Wagner with the ball. He’ll take it himself.

(They’ve been) playing basketball together for some time.

Wagner baseline finish on the left and the flex.

Watanabe (Yuta Watanabe) takes it in. A beautiful approach.

Misses. That one tipped back into German hand.

Wagner wants it back after doing the work. Instead Bonga (Isaac Bonga) the better option.

Turns and throws something up.

Franz Wagner, split the two defenders.

That’s really nice.

And here’s the younger Wagner, Franz Wagner, splitting defenders. Goes from left to right.

Change up on defense here as Japan picked up Germany full court.

Posted up as Theis (Daniel Theis) calls for it. Extra fast delivered in the dunk, Voigtmann (Johannes Voigtmann).

Baba (Yuta Baba) to Hawkinson (Josh Hawkinson). Behind double screen to Togashi (Yuki Togashi).

Pockets in there for the put back.

Franz (Wagner), a little quick change of pace and drills right past his defender.

Watanabe (Yuta Watanabe) driving baseline. Extra pass. Baba (Yudai Baba)!

They’ve been exposed a lot in this game.

Another B to B. Brother to brother. Franz to Moritz (Wagner).

Germany calling a timeout.

Just a mishandling of the ball. Moritz Wagner.

Out to Wagner.

Oh! This is a bad… Ankle injury.

Wagner on the deck. Japan running in transition. The dunk and feed to Watanabe (Yuta Watanabe). Nishida, (Yudai Nishida) the final shot. The lefty can’t catch anything and so that’s the final buzzer.

Togashi (Yuki Togashi ) back to Hawkinson (Joshua Hawkinson). That one was pretty.

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura). Some hand moves in there.

Wants to take the three and he’s got a shot to make it four.

Nkamhoua (Olivier Nkamhoua) slows things down.

Markkanen (Lauri Markkanen) only one way he’s going. Right to the rack.

That was impressive. Just bully ball.

He didn’t mean to do that. Wild shot results in an airball.

Valtonen (Elias Valtonen) driving it to Jantunen (Mikael Jantunen).

On that last one, and rightly so, Japan want to have a chat about it. They call a timeout.

Markkanen (Lauri Markkanen) turn and shoot. That one’s good. Kept it high.

They should be calling some plays for him. Get it into his hands. While he’s hot.

Jantunen (Mikael Jantunen), a fiery hand to follow up.

Hawkinson (Joshua Hawkinson). The skip pass was taken away (unclear) it.

The feed to Markkanen (Lauri Markkanen) and there’s the slam!

Markkanen (Lauri Markkanen) will take it for himself.

They’re collapsing.

And here even deeper. Tominaga (Keisei Tominaga)! Add another three to his stat sheet.

God. That… So he’s cooking. That’s no doubt that he’s hot.

Coming through. Baba (Yudai Baba). Oh!

You… you need Baba. You wanted more of him, Andrew, and he is there.

Tominaga (Keisei Tominaga) and Yudai Baba, in that time with the shot clock running out. They’re the easiest shots to take. No pressure because you know you have to shoot it.

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) had the lane. He lays it in.

He’s got a chance to get the lead.

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) shakes again. This time Kantonen (Henri Kantonen)! And he makes it in. It is tie.

A four-point lead and this guy’s got ice in his veins.

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) and company up by six.

He does it! He does it in time!

This is what happened in the last couple of positions ago.

And the final seconds, the buzzer has rung. Japan has made history. They have defeated their first European squad this evening.

Colmenares (Nestor Colmenares) wanted the blocking foul. No whistle, left alone. Watanabe (Yuta Watanabe)!

Inside, outside hook. Short recovered, stepping through now. Cubillan (David Cubillan) makes him pay.

A takeaway here for Venezuela. Materan (Jose Materan) on the block and the foul.  He gets an ‘and one’ chance.

Here in the second quarter Japan will go to the free throw line.

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) trying to beat him and he does.

Just ice.

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) to Hawkinson (Joshua Hawkinson). One dribble, up, misses.

Sojo (Garly Sojo) turning on the jets on his end.

Zamora (Jhornan Zamora) driving, floater, good for two.

The end, from down town!

We’re in motion, balls with Watanabe (Yuta Watanabe). Driving. Lefty over everybody.

And the third quarter comes to a close and closing in on the lead. It’s now down to nine. Venezuela is 62, Japan 53.

Japan really need to think about pushing the tempo. Get it up and down.

Hiejima (Makoto Hiejima) will find a way to make it count. Three from three.

He’s doing this well and try to get some rest, but Josh Wilkinson, he’s had a tough night.

Hiejima (Makoto Hiejima) will call his own number and he is feeling it.

Hiejima (Makoto Hiejima), left alone. This one will count for two if it drops and it does!

Sojo (Garly Sojo) driving, he coughs it up. Baba (Yudai Baba) with the ball. He’s looking for help. He finished it with Hiejima (Makoto Hiejima).

‘And one’ Hiejima (Makoto Hiejima).

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) over to Hiejima (Makoto Hiejima) now. Baseline.

And he will bang, bang!

They’re gonna stay back here. Let Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) have the final shot.

Sojo (Garly Sojo) here will throw it up, but it doesn’t matter. Because Japan, and that man right there, Tom Hovasse, have put together another massive comeback.

The crowd getting in this. Almeida (Ivan Almeida) driving, dishing. Correia (Andersson Correia), wing shot. Short.

Hiejima (Makoto Hiejima) holding on. He’ll give it to his buddy, Watanabe (Yuta Watanabe).

And again a nice feed.

For everybody not on the metric system, Tavares (Will Tavares) stands at 7 feet 3 inches.

Almeida (Ivan Almeida) spinning. Going right to the rack.

MVP of the recent Euro League final four playing for Real Madrid.

Japan change it up. They go to a 2-3zone.

Da Rosa (Shane Da Rosa) with a three. Some energy.

And Keisei Tominaga checks in.

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) looking for the cutter. Japan working around the horn.

Yoshii (Hirotaka Yoshii) to Hawkinson (Joshua Hawkinson). Money shot.

That was just brilliantly executed by Japan.

He’s (Shane Da Rosa) remained confident. He’s now made his last two. Two of four from the 3-point line. Thirteen points for the big fella.

Da Rosa (Shane Da Rosa), an answer here.

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) driving in. Tominaga (Keisei Tominaga) will pump fake. Get a little closer.

Lefty is good, the hook shot.

Tominaga (Keisei Tominaga) other side. Quick release for another three. He’s dancing out there.

Ivan Almeida with the ball. Spinning. Looking for a dump. Nothing there.

We’re going the other way with Baba (Yudai Baba).

He’s going the way of Japan. Yudai Baba.

Togashi (Yuki Togashi), wanting in on the dinner party.

Gomes (Betinho Gomes) from three.

Rolls in and out. Put back (unclear) there.

The attack no good. Tavares (Edy Tavares) will kick it out. Correia (Andersson Correia).

Beat behind the three-point line. That one drops in. The lead now cut to 12.

Almeida (Ivan Almeida) pulling the trigger. Off. Tavares (Edy Tavares) with the rebound. Put back, Almeida (Ivan Almeida).

It’s a ten-oh. It’s a 10-0 start to the fourth.

Gomes (Betinho Gomes) on the block. Tavares (Edy Tavares) posting up. Trying to get it to the big guy.

That’s gonna be an ‘and one.’

Kawamura (Yuki Kawamura) to the rescue. He’s driving. The feed. Extra handoff . Hawkinson (Joshua Hawkinson)!

‘And one, ’ Hawkinson (Joshua Hawkinson)! Count it!

Watanabe (Yuta Watanabe) will cross over. A little hot potato here.

Hawkinson (Joshua Hawkinson) in the corner. Insurance. It’s in. Japan! The dagger.

Japan, get on your feet. You are going to the Olympics.
