Idiom ｜ The Elephant in the Room
The idiom “the elephant in the room” is an obvious problem or difficult situation that people do not want to talk about, but the problem is so big it can’t be ignored.
The ‘elephant’ is generally an enormous topic, which is obvious to everyone that knows about the situation, but that deliberately avoided because it will make people uncomfortable, as it could cause;
- sadness,
- create arguments,
- be politically or socially embarrassing,
- inflammatory,
- or the topic is considered taboo.
イディオム“The elephant in the room”は話しにくい、けれども無視できないくらいの大きな問題、困難な状況をさす言い方です。
ここでいう‘elephant（象）’は皆さんが気づいてはいるものの声をあげにくいトピック、すなわち、
- 悲しみをよびおこす内容
- 議論をまきおこす内容
- 政治的・社会的に恥ずかしい内容
- 怒りをかき立てるような内容
- 話すことがためらわれるタブーな内容
をさします。
Idiom Usage ｜ The Elephant in the Room 使い方
We can use this idiom correctly several different ways. The first is by using the verb ‘be.’ The idiom can come before or after the verb.
For example;
- XXX is the elephant in the room.
- The elephant in the room is XXX.
The second way a sentence can be constructed is a little more interesting. Instead of using the verb ‘be,’ it’s replaced with the phrase ‘let’s talk about.’ This phrasing is less flexible, however, and must lead.
For example;
- Let’s talk about the elephant in the room.
The idiom can be used in the negative form or the question, but native speakers usually opt to use it in the positive form.
通常、
- XXX is the elephant in the room.
- The elephant in the room is XXX.
のような形でBe動詞とともに利用されることが多いです。
また、変化球としては、
- Let’s talk about the elephant in the room.
のような形で使われることもあります。
なおこのイディオムは、否定形もしくは疑問形で活用することもできますが、どちらかというとまれですので、まずは上記の基本の形で覚えていきましょう。

This is an easy phrase to apply mnemonic to. You can just envision an actual elephant in a room that people are actively trying not to look at.
