Good Web Communication

The world has changed since Covid. Our business and personal lives have become much more digital. It remains to be seen how life will be after the pandemic, but there is a good chance that telework is here to stay. Learning good web communication is a must now.

Digital meetings and remote working will become more common, perhaps even the norm. This will be even truer for the US and countries in the EU, where there is less of a traditional office culture.

Holding web-conferencing and having conversation over video calls have their own set of problems, and their own unique phases. Some of the language has its roots in telephones, but most of it doesn’t. This mainly due to the fact that we have the addition of video and that multi-party communication is more common.

As the technology improves, we will certainly be seeing more distance learning, distance training, hybrid working conditions, and more opportunity for remote work.

ウェブ会議、ビデオコールをすると、特有の問題が発生したり、独特なフレーズがあったりします。

電話でのフレーズと同じものもありますが、違うものがほとんどです。

ビデオがついていること、また複数の方が参加されるという性質が起因しているのかもしれません。

技術が進歩すれば、遠隔教育、遠隔トレーニング、ハイブリッド（混合）の仕事環境、リモートワークのチャンスがもっと増えてくるでしょう。

Common Phrases in Web Communication 一般的なフレーズ

Before we can enter this brave new digital world, we need to get some language under our belt. The first two phrases are interchangeable with telephones, but the other phrases are specific to video conferencing.

Can you hear me?

You’re breaking up.

This means your audio isn’t clear.

I can’t see you. I think your video is off.

This means there’s no video. The screen is black.

Your video is really blocky.

This means the resolution of the video is very poor.

You’re frozen.

This means your video isn’t working. We can see the person, but the image isn’t moving.

You’re out of sync.

This means your audio is and video don’t match up.

There’s no audio. I can’t hear you. Can you hear me?

This means there is no sound at all. So, you probably won’t get any response.

One of the biggest advantages to the technology, besides the addition of video, is the ability to send text messages to recipients.

最初の2つは電話でもおなじみのフレーズです。

Can you hear me?

聞こえますでしょうか？

You’re breaking up.

途切れ途切れで聞き取りづらいです。

相手側の音声がクリアではないことをさします。

I can’t see you. I think your video is off.

あなたがみえません。ビデオがオフになっていると思います。

相手のビデオ機能がオンになっておらず真っ黒なスクリーンがこちらにうつしだされている場合このように表現します。

Your video is really blocky.

あなたのビデオがギザギザ（なめらかに線が表現されていない状況）でみえづらいです。

相手のビデオの解像度が低いときこのように伝えます。

You’re frozen.

ビデオが固まっています。

相手のビデオが固まってしまい動いていないときにこのように表現します。

You’re out of sync.

音と動画が同調していません。

相手の音と動画がずれている場合、このような言い方をします。

There’s no audio. I can’t hear you. Can you hear me?

音声が全く届いていないです。全く聞こえません。こちらの音声は届いていますか。

相手の音声がこちらへまったく届いていないときこのように表現します。テクノロジーの恩恵をえてビデオ機能がありますので、こちらの音がきこえていないようでしたらメッセージを送ることができます。

Confirmation Phrases

As you troubleshoot problems, it’s imperative that you use confirmation language with the other person/people.

Can you hear me now?

Can you see me now?

If problems persist, disconnecting and reconnecting can sometimes fix the problem.

I think there’s something wrong with our connection. Let’s disconnect and I will call you back.

It’s very important to establish who will make the call. If both parties are trying to call each other at the same time, the connection will be unsuccessful.
