Transcript | The Stones vs The Beatles

- Who are the greatest, the Stones or the Beatles?
I don’t care.
- No?
I think it’s an irrelevant question.
- Yeah.
- How do you compare your group with the Beatles?
I don’t know. How do you compare it with the Beatles? I don’t compare it at all, you know, there’s no point.
- Well, let’s get right down to the brass tacks. Do you think you’re better than they are?
At… at what? You know, it’s… it’s not the same group, so we just do what we want and they do what they want. And there’s no point in going on comparing us. You can prefer us to them or them to us. It’s just diplomatic, you see.
- Very diplomatic, and I don’t want to labor it, but do you feel you do what you want to do better than they do what they want to do?
Uh,
Yes.
probably. I don’t know. I don’t know what they want to do, you see. Very diplomatic.
- Do you think, uh, there was a great difference in image making, if we speak about that aspect? I mean, like, the Beatles were nice little kids.
Yeah, well that’s the cliché.
- Yeah.
They got cleaned up by their manager, and, um, to make them more palatable to the public. Otherwise, they were exactly the same as we were. Filthy swine. Um…
But Brain Epstein didn’t want to sell them as such. He sold them as these lovable scamps and funny, and could be sarcastic, but nevertheless lovable.
So Andrew wanted us to be more nasty and more dirty, more of an edge. Which is a very good sell. And… and it wasn’t difficult for us to do, because, you know, you’re that age it’s quite easy to have that edge.
Um, in actual fact, the Beatles were horrible little brats.
- Yeah.
Uh, as John Lennon would have told you.
- Yeah.
I mean, he was rude to everyone, but no, and he just did it with a smile. Everyone thought he was nice.
- Yeah. How about you and the Stones?
You can stop taking photographs.
Shut up, man.
Well, we did it, we did it without a smile and everyone thought we were nasty. We were quite similar.
- Yeah.
- I’m not asking you to be pompous about this; the Beatles are better than the Rolling Stones. Am I correct?
Well, you know, Howard, you know, you’re gonna persuade me to agree with that one. I’ve always said it, you know? But the thing is, the Stones are a fantastic group. I… I go see them every time they come out,
- Absolutely.
cause they’re just a great, great band. I love’em. Um…
- Yeah, but did it…
Their stuff’s rooted in the blues, um,
- Yes.
and so, that when they’re kind of writing stuff, it’s… it’s… it’s to do with the blues, you know? Where as, we… we had a little more influences.
I mean, Keith once said to me, he said “Man, you’re lucky, man.” You know? He said, “You have four singers in your band.” He said,
- Right.
“We’ve got one.” So,
- That’s right.
you know, there’s… there’s a lot of differences, but I love the Stones. But, I’m with you, the Beatles were better.
