The Beatles and Elvis Presley are arguably two of the greatest musical forces of the 20the century. On August 27, 1965 those musical giants collided at Elvis’s California home.
In this English video lesson we’ll hear from all four of the former Beatles, Priscilla Presley, and Elvis himself as they tell the story of what happened. We’ll learn some of the key phrases and how to use them. A must watch for any rock and roll fan.

Transcript ｜ The Beatles vs Elvis
- A psychologist recently said you’re nothing but four Elvis Presleys.
He must be blind.
It’s not true. It’s not true.
It goes something like this.
Brian Epstein knowing how much the Beatles, um, idolized Elvis, admired him, um, got a hold of Colonel Parker to see if there was any kind of arrangement that could be made.
This meet was arranged. We were gonna go and see him. I was pretty excited.
It was, um, one of the highlights of our visit. Oh, we had a couple of ‘cups of tea’ in the back of the car. And by the time we got to Elvis’s house we forgot where we were going. We pulled up and there were these big gates and somebody says;
“Oh, yeah. We’re going to see Elvis!”
And then we all fell out, just like in a Beatle cartoon. We all fell out the car. All, “tee he.” All in hysterics. Trying to pretend we weren’t silly.
What was shocking was that fans were lining up and coming around the gate and knew something was going on. Knew the Beatles were coming. And we were going; “How could this happen? This was all very secretive.” All of a sudden there’s like over a hundred fans out… out in front of the gate waiting for them to come.
- And, um, you knew that they were here by the fact that, um, some of your peers, other kids, were up here, right?
Yeah. Yeah, they told us.
- So that was your clue.
Yeah.
- You glad you saw them?
Yeah. I wish I could see them come out, though. I wanna get another picture of ‘em.
We learned later that Colonel planned all of that. But we just couldn’t figure out how they all knew.
And then we went in the house and there’s Elvis sitting on a couch, playing a Fender bass.
I mean, it was Elvis. He just… just looked like Elvis.
This is Mr. Hips, you know? Hip-swiveling man!
Wow. You know? That’s Elvis!

They were totally speechless. They were truly like kids, you know, meeting their Idol, especially John Lennon. John was shy, timid, looking at him. I mean, I… I really believe that he just couldn’t believe that he was actually there with Elvis Presley.
He had a TV going all the time, which is what I do anyway. And in front of the TV, he had a massive big bass amplifier. So, we just got in there and, um, played with him. You know? We all plugged in what was ever around and we played and sang.
I never jammed with Elvis at all.
No. John said he’d…
John jammed with Elvis.
Yeah. It must’ve been when we went out of the room.
He must’ve gone over secretly at night…
I think it was because he had a bass there, you know, so I thought…
In the basement.
Right. Well, you know, bass. Hey, he’s interested in bass.
Ringo was playing football with him, though.
Yeah, I played football with Elvis.
They were so cute. They were so excited, but so nervous. You could hear a pin drop when they walked in. You… you know, they looked around the room. They came in, you know? They’re kind of like looking and, you know, all they cared about was, you know, seeing Elvis.
You couldn’t get close. You know, it’s not like we could have become good friends. It was impossible. It’s just he was surrounded by these sycophants.
You know, all his gang, the Memphis Mafia, or whatever they call them, all those guys.
“I’m going to the loo now.”
“Ok, El, we’ll go with you.”
You know? It was just so strange. And I was just so angry that he wasn’t making any music.
I think that Elvis, you know, walked away from that thinking that these were good kids. That they’ve already sensed, you know, their popularity. But I think that knowing that they were in the States and they were getting a lot of recognition that he wished them a lot of luck.
I mean, the saddest part is now, year and years later, we found out that he tried to have us banished from America because he was very big with the C.I.A. and everything. And… that’s, um, that’s very sad to me that he… he felt so threatened, you know, that he thought, like a lot of people, that we were bad American youth.
