Learn Real English ｜ Oppenheimer
J. Robert Oppenheimer was a polarizing figure in his time and remains so today. With Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Oppenheimer’ finally being released in Japan, almost a year after it’s US debut and with seven Oscars, including best picture, under it’s belt, it has given audiences worldwide much to think about.
In this lesson we’ll take a look at what Mr. Oppenheimer said about ‘the bomb,’ years after they were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Let’s see what was said, learn some of the key vocabulary, and how to use them.
J. ロバート・オッペンハイマーは、その時代においても、そして今日においても、評価が大きくわかれる存在である。クリストファー・ノーラン監督の映画「オッペンハイマー」は、全米公開から約1年を経てようやく日本でも公開され、アカデミー賞では作品賞を含む7部門で受賞するなど、世界中の観客に多くのことを考えさせる作品となっています。
このレッスンでは、広島と長崎に原爆が投下されてから数年後、オッペンハイマー氏が原爆について語っている動画をみていきます。そこより重要な語彙とその使い方を学んでいきましょう。

We knew the world would not be the same.
Few people laughed, few people cried, most people were silent.
I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture; the Bhagavad Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty, and to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.”
I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.
- Looking back now, do you think that our country’s use of the bomb was necessary?
I believe that the view, which I learned from many, but above all from General Marshall and from… from Colonel Stimson, the Secretary of War; the view that they had, that we would have to fight our way to the main islands and that it would involve a slaughter of Americans and Japanese on a massive scale, was arrived at by then in good faith with regret and on the best evidence that they then had.
To that alternative, I think the bomb was an enormous relief. The ending of the war by this means, certainly cruel, was not undertaken lightly, but I am not as of today confident that a better course was then open.
