Learn Real English ｜ Kodo Nishimura
Kodo Nishimura is not your average Japanese Buddhist monk. He’s a make-up artist and LGBTQ advocate. Using what he calls using Buddhism and beauty, he projects a positive life affirming message that encourages people to be who they are.
In this lesson we’ll hear about his journey to becoming a monk, learn some of the key phrases, and how to use them.
西村宏堂さんは普通の日本の僧侶ではありません。彼はメイクアップアーティストで、LGBTQ活動家でもあります。仏教と美を用い、人々がありのままの自分でいることをすすめる人生を肯定するポジティブなメッセージを発信されています。
このレッスンでは、彼が僧侶になるまでの経験を語った動画をききながら、重要なフレーズとその使い方を学んでいきましょう。

I can be a monk wearing heels, so you can be who you are.
Because I was born in a temple, people expected me to be a monk.
People asked me, like, “Oh, do you practice chanting?” or “Do you have to shave your head?” And I was like, “Hell no. I don’t want to do that.”
During the training to become a Buddhist monk, I asked my master; is it ok that I’m a homosexual? Can I still be welcomed in the Buddhist community?
And my master said, in Buddhism, everybody can be equally liberated. Race, sexuality, disability, it doesn’t matter at all.
This is something that I would really love to introduce to the world, because I see some people are not as welcomed or respected because of who they are.
