Hayato Sumino, Japanese musician and YouTuber, made his Hong Kong debut at the HKU Muse series where he discussed various topics about music, as well as playing classical pieces and his own original works.
In these video lessons we’ll hear Hayato Sumino speaking English and playing selective works on piano. We’ll learn some of the key phrases and how to use them. This is a must watch for any music fans.

Classical music is often considered to be old.
I believe it’s still changing, evolving. So I go back and forth between different eras.
I always… I want to present modern, our era’s music, as well as traditional music.
Another piece is called “Big Cat Waltz.” I composed it for my cat.
He lives in parents’ house. He’s big. He’s fat, but he jumps and runs fast easily.
I thought it’s very, very cute. Lovely and funny, so I was inspired by his movements.

I started playing piano when I was three. My mom was a classical piano teacher, so when I was in elementary school I only played classical music.
When I entered junior high school I got interested in other genres of music; jazz, rock.
I tried to play this kind of music in my own way and I started uploading my videos on the internet.
Until that time, I never expected my classical background and my YouTube background would cross.
And I thought this difference in my… as one of my strengths, because nobody did it.
Two hundred years ago, like 19th century, everybody did improvisation, arrangement, composer, compositions, and performances, to… altogether. Like, Chopin did. Like, Franz Liszt did. Beethoven did.
So, I got a lot of inspiration from them. Always classical music is my biggest base and to make something new, to learn something new.

Will AI replace humans or not in the future?
To me, the… this kind of question doesn’t make sense, really.
When the computer came out, people started using synthesizer, desktop music stuff, EDM stuff.
At that time, people also worried about humans… musicians could be replaced to computers. But still, we’re doing music. We are collaborating with human.
In the future I’m sure AI will be able to perform Chopin’s Etudes perfectly, both technically and musically.
So, what we can do is not just play perfectly, but also focus more on personality, rather than being good or not, like technically.
