Guessing Asian nationality is kind of like a game show in this video from YouTube. A pair of white Americans ask a series of a questions to a group of people from all different countries in Asia to try and correctly guess where they are from.

In this lesson we’ll take a look at select clips from the YouTube video. We’ll see what was said, learn some of the key vocabulary phrases, and how to use them.

This is easy. I told you before when I saw her sitting over there. I knew it.


  • Can you introduce yourself for me in English?

My name is Ninj. Um, I like to skate and surf.

  • Do you mind pronouncing that word?

Rural… that’s so hard. Rural. Squirrel.

  • Super close. That was almost perfect, actually. Um, now, if I had to guess what country she’s from just by appearance… I have no idea. I wanna ssss… I wanna say, like, Kazakhstan or something. Because Kazakhstan people look half Asian and half White. But, I’m not 100% sure right now.
  • Do little kids in your country speak English fluently?

Not really.

  • And how about, like, the spiciness level of the food in general? Is it high?

No spice.

  • No spice? Ok, well I was going to guess Japanese.

No.

  • No?
  • I’m gonna say Mongolian.

Right.

  • Yes! Wooo!

It’s really high in the mountain.

  • Nepal?

Closer. We ride a horse.

  • Mongolia.

Yeah.

  • Ok, Mongolia.

  • Hi. Can you introduce yourself in English?

Hi, everyone. My name is Saki. And um, I live in Korean 9 years. I have a dogs, so I… my hobby is, like um, go to the, like, cute, like, café with my dog.

  • Hi, I’m Zak.

Hi, I’m Saki.

  • She’s Japanese. This is easy. I told you, I told you from before she was sitting over there. I knew it.
  • Can you read the word on the screen?

Rural. Squirrel.

  • That she’s trying with her makeup. She’s trying with her hair. She’s trying with her outfit. Um… It almost comes to like too much trying and that’s what gives it away as Japanese. She’s, like, extra cute.
  • Is your country known for anime and manga? And maybe sushi?

Yeah, something like that. Yeah.

  • Ok. I think she’s Japanese.
  • I don’t need to say anything else. That was easy.
