Understanding Idioms
What Are They?
Idioms are phrases or expressions which have a figurative meaning, rather than a literal meaning.
In short, we can understand that the value of the words by themselves have little meaning, but as a phrase they have a lot of meaning. The sum is greater than the parts.
イディオムは文字通りの意味というよりかは比喩的な意味をもつフレーズや表現をさします。
端的にいいますと、個々の単語の意味はなく、フレーズとして意味をもつようなものになります。
Here’s an example:
例をここにあげます：
⫸It’s raining cats and dogs.
The sentence has nothing to do with cats and dogs. Rather this idiomatic expression is communicating that it’s raining very hard.
このイディオムは猫や犬とは全く関係ない意味となり、土砂降りをあらわすイディオムの表現となっています。

Idiomatic expression are complicated to understand. We must have prior knowledge of the phrase before we can use/understand. So, why bother?
Well, they:
- allow us to communicate faster.
- allow us to talk about taboo topics easier.
- allow us to broach topics in more lighthearted way.
- color your language and make you sounds more interesting and fun.
イディオムは少し難しいですよね。利用する、もしくは理解するには、フレーズについて事前に知っておく必要があります。ではなんでこんなややこしいことをしなければならないのでしょうか。

- イディオムを使うことでいいづらいトピックでも軽妙に話題にあげることができる
- イディオムを使うことでより気軽にトピックを切り出すことができる
- イディオムを使うことであなたらしさをそえ、興味深く、そして楽しくきこえるようになる

Even if you don’t want to use idioms or don’t find a particular idiom to be useful in your everyday life, they are still important. The main reason is that native speakers use idioms all the time. Idiomatic phrases are so ingrained in the language that it is near impossible to have a conversation in English and not use or hear one. There are a heavily used and essential part of the language.
To know English is to know idioms.
イディオムを自分は使わないよであったり、日常生活のなかで使えそうなイディオムがみつからないとお思いであっても、やっぱりイディオムは重要です。
というのも、英語のネイティブスピーカーはイディオムを常に使ってるからです。
慣用句は言語のなかに深く根付いており、英語の会話内で使わずに、また聞かずにすむようなものではありません。よく使われ、言語の中の不可欠な要素となっています。
英語を理解することはイディオムをも理解することになるといえます。
